The world’s largest wrestling promotion hit Alberta last weekend, and with it came worldwide headlines due to the actions of one inconvenienced superstar. That wasn’t all that took place across the Albertan indie scene, however, and we’ve got it all right here!

Lacey Evans Hates Alberta

It doesn’t appear as though Lacey Evans will be planning Alberta as a vacation destination any time soon.

While a match to Natalya at last weekend’s WWE Live event in Calgary may not have gone her way, the loss pales in comparison to Evans’ trip up Highway 2 on Saturday afternoon.

In a now-viral moment, Evans was pulled over by the RCMP for speeding while travelling to Edmonton for Saturday night’s live event at Rogers Place.

“I hope you have a terrible day,” Evans can be heard saying in the video. “Canada is terrible.”

Since the video’s launch, Evans and the Canadian RCMP have come out and admitted the event was a stunt.

Evans would later go on to lose her match against Natalya that evening, proving that bad things do, in fact, come in threes.

As the officer in the now-famous video says, “Welcome to Edmonton.”

Phoenix Loses, Reclaims MPW Women’s Championship

The Phoenix always rises.

It was an eventful weekend for Monster Pro Wrestling, with a three-show mini-tour reaching Lloydminster, Edmonton and Hinton taking place from Thursday-Saturday. While by all accounts the in-ring action was terrific from all involved, it was the women who stole the headlines with a trio of standout matches and a pair of championship changes.

The first of the title swaps took place on Thursday night in Lethbridge, where Sexy Samantha defeated Phoenix to capture the MPW Women’s Championship. As could be expected, unfortunately, the win wasn’t entirely Sam’s, but in part due to the interference of “Beautiful” Blake Kannon. Sadly, though the chicanery was clear, it went unnoticed by the referee, and Thursday concluded with Sexy Sam at the top of the women’s division.

However, while Samantha was able to dispatch of Taryn from Accounting during her Friday night title defence in Edmonton, Saturday proved that in a straight one-on-one matchup, there are few better than Phoenix. Hinton was the site of her championship rematch, and as they did on Thursday, the pair delivered yet another standout match. However, this time, it was Phoenix that left with not only her hand raised, but the MPW Women’s Championship after another hard-fought contest between the two bitter rivals.

Spears’ Return, Clark vs. Blais Highlight PWA Fall Fever Card

Saturday night will see the Prairie Wrestling Alliance return to Edmonton’s Northgate Lions Seniors Centre for Fall Fever, the promotion’s first event in the capital region since hosting Retribution on August 24th. It goes without saying when referencing the PWA, but as per usual, the promotion’s done an excellent job of building a must-watch card for any Albertan wrestling fans.

While full of main-event matchups, the evening looks set to be headlined by both PWA Champion Michael Allen Richard Clark and challenger Michael Richard Blais. The 28th will also see the return of PWA Commonwealth Champion and AEW superstar Shawn Spears as he’s set to face off with former titleholder and one of Western Canada’s finest in Shaun MooreAndy Anderson is also making his long-awaited return to the promotion in facing off with Maxton Flexwell, while Zoë Sager makes her second defence of the PWA Women’s Championship against long-time rival Kylie Morgan.

Tickets for the PWA’s next show in Edmonton are available in advance from Variant Edition Comics (10132 151 Street) or PAWS the Cat Cafe (10588 109 Street).

Confusion Reigns in PPW Cruiserweight Division

At Friday night’s PPW Back in Session, Kenn Stevens challenged Jumpin’ Josh for the PPW Cruiserweight Championship after cashing in his title shot won at June’s Summer Sizzler. It ostensibly marked the conclusion of a heated five-month feud; however, Friday night added yet another wrinkle in the long-winding history between the two.

The conclusion of Friday evening’s matchup was, surprisingly, cut-and-dry. A victory from Jumpin’ Josh seemingly solidified his spot at the top of the Cruiserweight Division; however, it only marked the continuation of his bitter feud with Stevens. Following the matches’ conclusion, Stevens’ manager Vinny Valentine not only attacked Josh but stole his championship before exiting the venue.

The next evening in Cranbrook, British Columbia provided Josh with an opportunity at a little redemption on both Stevens and Valentine. Unfortunately, another hard-fought contest was marred by post-match actions on the part of Kenn Stevens. Following a double countout draw, Stevens hit the Cruiserweight Champion with a low-blow and absconded with the title yet again.

In a statement released by PPW, the promotion stated that while they still recognize Jumpin’ Josh as the Cruiserweight Champion, the title remains in Stevens’ possession. The promotion - as well as Jumpin’ Josh himself - is also giving the opportunity for Stevens to return the championship at this Friday’s event in Taber, Alberta.

Once stood in front of Cedric Alexander in line at a hotel. Slightly big deal.
